Ezra Judah’s middle name is in honor of my Aunt Janet, who tragically passed away just a few weeks ago after a sudden and brief battle with Ovarian Cancer. While we are still reeling from her loss, we have taken solace in being able to celebrate her life with the birth of our son. We were fortunate to go on a trip to Florida with her before the pandemic and she was enamored by Ezra’s big sister Simone. Aunt Janet was a fiercely strong woman with an incredible sense of humor. She was like a second mother to me for much of my childhood. In fact, she often liked to remind me that she was the one who saved the day when I vomited all over my dress the morning of my baby naming ceremony. I like to think that she is making sure Ezra doesn’t vomit right now, but would have a good cackle if he does.
Aunt Janet was a social worker and director at Jewish Family Services in Rochester NY. Her entire career consisted of helping immigrants, underserved families and those in need of emotional support or essential services.
Ezra Judah, we hope that in carrying on her legacy, you also take with you on your journey her attunement to other’s needs, her resilience in the face of adversity and her unique ability to find the humor in it all.
